Professor Bowker received his PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Melbourne, followed by a post-doctoral position at l'Ecole des Mines in Paris. Over his career, he has published extensively on such topics as classification and standardization in medicine, distributed collaborative work practices in environmental science, data sharing practices and biodiversity information, and information infrastructures and storytelling in science, to name but a few. Prior to his current position as Director of the Values in Design Laboratory at UC Irvine, Dr. Bowker held positions as Professor and Senior Scholar of Cyberscholarship at the University of Pittsburgh, Executive Director of the Center for Science, Technology and Society at Santa Clara University, and Professor of Communication at UCSD, among others.
